Irēna Upeniece, associate professor of Sports and Nutrition Department, Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare at Riga Stradiņš University. Doctor of pedagogical sciences (Dr.paed.). Has graduated from Latvian State Institute of Physical Culture and since 1979 have been working in Riga Medical Institute (now Riga Stradiņš University). In 1995 had completed doctoral studies at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology of University of Latvia and, after successfully defending the promotion thesis, had been awarded a PhD in Pedagogy (Dr. paed). Works at Riga Stradiņš University teaching courses related to a wide scope of pedagogy. In scientific and popular scientific publications, conferences, TV and radio broadcasts she emphasizes the role of physical activities and healthy lifestyle in development of personality as well as in lifelong improvement and maintenance of health. Optimal physical activity – exercise for health is necessary for every modern man to ensure wholesome existence and emotional balance.
